Make a Chinese Lantern

Chinese lantern: contributed by Serena

1.Take a sheet of 9x12 red construction paper and fold it in half, lengthwise.

2.Then students cut a straight line from the fold to the opposite side leaving 1" margin. This will make a cut in the middle of the paper when the paper is unfolded. Do this several times leaving a 1/2" space between each cut.

3. Open the paper. Make a tall cylinder out of the paper so that the cuts are vertical.

4. Staple or glue the cylinder together.  Make red or yellow construction paper strips to hang on the bottom of the lantern to decorate. Students in the past have curled the paper, made an accordion out of it, or have attached it to the around the top and bottom of the lantern to make a a yellow band.

5.Finally, take a strip of red construction paper. Attach both ends to the top to make a handle.

Option: Students can learn how to write Happy New Year in characters or pin yin (letters) Xin nian kuai le.
